What is FIDO? A Quick Overview
FIDO stands for Fast Identity Online. It is an authentication standard developed by the FIDO Alliance, designed to replace traditional passwords with a more secure and convenient login method.
FIDO primarily uses public key cryptography, combined with biometric authentication (such as fingerprints or facial recognition) or hardware security keys. The private key is securely stored on the user’s device, significantly reducing the risk of personal data breaches.
How FIDO Works
During registration:
The device generates a pair of cryptographic keys—a public key and a private key. The public key is sent to the server for future verification, while the private key is securely stored on the user’s device.
During login:
The server sends a challenge to the device. The device signs the challenge using the stored private key, which is unlocked through user authentication on the device, such as fingerprint or facial recognition.
Security:
Because the private key never leaves the user’s device, even if the server is compromised, attackers cannot steal the private key. This greatly enhances account security.
Advantages of FIDO
Passwordless authentication:
No need to remember or enter passwords, making the login process faster and more user-friendly.
Enhanced security:
By using public/private key cryptography and device binding, FIDO significantly reduces the risk of credential theft, such as phishing attacks or brute-force attempts.
Privacy protection:
Sensitive data, including biometric information, is stored locally on the user’s device and is never uploaded to servers, minimizing the risk of personal data leakage.
Applications of FIDO
Cross-platform and cross-service usage:
FIDO standards allow users to use the same secure authentication method across different websites and applications. For example, Taiwan’s mobile digital ID solution, TWFIDo, is one such implementation.
Financial services:
Many financial institutions, such as Cathay United Bank and Mega International Commercial Bank, have adopted FIDO technology in their mobile apps to provide more secure and convenient login experiences.
Government services:
Government agencies are also promoting the use of FIDO to reduce the risk of sensitive data breaches. A notable example is the Ministry of the Interior’s Mobile Citizen Digital Certificate (TWFIDo).
